Saline implants became popular when silicone safety was questioned by the FDA in the United States. Since the early 90's until very recently, Saline Implants were the only option for Americans.

The advantage of saline is that in the unlikely event of an implant leak or rupture, the salt water simply gets absorbed by the patient's body. This gave peace of mind to many American women who were terrified of developing a complication from silicone. This fear, however, has been unfounded. Many studies have shown that Silicone does not cause illness.
