HOWEVER

  • Coverage is not automatic
  • Coverage is limited to the direct excision of the breast tissue.
  • OHIP DOES NOT cover cosmetic improvements to the breast shape such as liposuction sculpting, liposuction of the area around the breasts
  • OHIP DOES NOT cover breast lifts

In order to have a breast reduction surgery, you will need to be seen by Dr. Jugenburg who will assess you to ensure that you are healthy to undergo the procedure, and that you qualify for the OHIP criteria in order for OHIP to fund this procedure. An OHIP Application form will have to be filled out and mailed to the Ministry of Health. It usually takes 4-6 weeks for them to assess the request for approval of the breast reduction surgery. The information required, in addition to the patient demographic information, includes the following:

  • height, weight, and current cup size
  • presence of back pain, neck pain, shoulder grooving, skin infections under the breast

Large breast alone, generalized discomfort and feeling of heaviness, or simply unappealing appearance of large breasts will not qualify you for OHIP coverage.

If OHIP declines to cover the procedure, then you may still go ahead, but it is treated as a purely cosmetic procedure.
